Cognitive Load Theory & Load Reduction Instruction: Implications for School Psychologists

In the course of our assessments, school psychologists often encounter students with memory deficits, either in their ability to retain or recall information. In fact, it is very rare that a student’s memory is not linked to their learning difficulties. Cognitive Load Theory (CLT), developed primarily by Dr. John Sweller (2019), and Load Reduction Instruction (LRI) developed by Dr. Andrew J Martin (2016) at the University of New South Wales, Australia, can assist school psychologists in the understanding and remediation of student memory deficits.
