We will cover how the science of reading informs our current understanding of reading development and remediation, suggested assessments and interventions for teachers (RTI or MTSS), and what we know about H.B. 436 (Ohio's new Dyslexia Law), including what we know, what’s to come, and how we can begin to prepare. The presentation will take place on Wednesday, June 2nd from 9:00am to 12:00pm. A Zoom link will be provided following registration.

The Kent Akron Association of School Psychologists (KAASP) is one of the regional affiliates
of the Ohio School Psychologists Association. KAASP is committed to promoting the
professional growth of school psychologists by sharing ideas, methods, and current research
and practices in the area of school psychology and other related fields.
TOPIC: Reading Foundations, Remediation, and the Road Forward with Ohio's New Dyslexia Law
TRAINING GOAL:
As school psychologists, we are often sought out for assistance with reading instruction for helping in the design
and implementation of MTSS programs, administering diagnostic reading assessments, and recommending and
implementing reading interventions at multiple tiers of instruction. Ohio continues to focus on improving literacy
achievement and with the passage of House BIll 436 more attention is being focused on helping all students
improve their literacy achievement with effective instruction and evidence based interventions. The goal of this
presentation will be to further enhance attendees' understanding of the science of reading, provide evidence based
assessments and intervention recommendations, and discuss the future of literacy education with the passing of
House Bill 436.

WHO: Mija Trammell - Literacy Coach - Lebron James Family Foundation School of Education
University of Akron Center for Literacy
Mija Trammell brings over 25 years of experience to her role as a literacy trainer/consultant. Her experience
includes teaching and leadership in K-5, special education, and Reading Recovery in public, private and virtual
settings in Texas, Florida, and Ohio. In her role as a literacy coach for the University of Akron Center for Literacy,
she works in multiple districts throughout Summit county supporting teachers in utilizing research-based best
practices in their teaching of reading and writing. In addition, she supervises the Center for Literacy’s Undergraduate
Intern program - training and supporting interns as they work with teachers and students in multiple Summit County
schools. Mija holds a B.S. in Elementary and Special Education from Texas Tech University and an M.A. in
Elementary Education with a specialization in Literacy from the University of Akron.
